Late this past Sunday, ABC released the first 17 minutes of season 5 episode 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it was one crazy introduction for the new season. While we aren’t introduced to any new relevant characters yet, it does leave a lot of speculation as to what the new season has in store and how it will tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (cough Infinity Wars).
Warning spoilers. If you haven’t watched the clip yet and do not want to be spoiled, I suggest you turn back now.
If you don’t remember what happened in the previous season, Agent Coulson and the gang were abducted by a man in a black suit and came to realize that they were on a space station.
This new season picks up right where we left things. The gang is abducted by a person wearing a suit who we find out is actually an alien wearing a costume to make himself look human. The gang is taken to an empty room only to find another monolith!
If you don’t remember the monolith, it was the big rock that transported Agent Simmons to another planet. In similar fashion, this new monolith liquefies and swallows the crew transporting them to what appears to be a space station.
There we see Agent Coulson meet two mystery men who are currently on the run from a loud screeching noise. We later find out it belongs to a race of aliens that are referred to as “roaches”. One of the mysterious guys are instantly pulled out of sight and dies off-screen. The other man identifies himself as Virgil who says he was waiting for them. He continues to explain that Coulson and his crew were prophesied to save the human race. What that actually means isn’t made clear, but one can speculate a lot of things.
One thing that does come to mind, which I think is pretty abundantly clear, is that this is going to tie into the new Avengers Infinity War movie.
As Virgil is about to continue revealing more, Mack shows up and knocks Virgil out cold mistaking him as a threat. Coulson and Mack then meet up with Agents Yoyo and Simmons who were in the middle of examining a few dead bodies they found, Agent May was teleported as well but ended somewhere else impaled against a metal hose and clip before we get a chance to see her united with the rest of the gang. Coulson starts brainstorming what’s happening.
There are two things that viewers see which make us think that this season will tie into the Infinity War arc.
The first is Yoyo thinking that S.H.I.E.L.D. had a secret division called Spear hiding somewhere on the moon. This is a direct reference to the comics where a secret division did exist, called S.W.O.R.D. Their main headquarters was a space station called Peak and they once fought off the Skrull Empire from invading Earth. The second thing was on the unconscious body of Virgil. Coulson finds a postcard from Lake Ontario, Canada. This could be a reference to a superhero group called Alpha Strike based in Canada. While most of their missions revolved around defending Canada there is one arc where they do fight an alien race called the Plodex. I don’t think Marvel will introduce Alpha Flight into the mix and the reason for showing us the postcard was to further hint at S.H.I.E.L.D. becoming involved in the war of the infinity stones.
In another scene, we are also introduced to another mystery character who wears a helmet that looks similar to that of Star-Lord from the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, this character has blue lights instead of red. It is unclear of who he is and what his role is in all of this, but it does add to the theory that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will help in the upcoming war.
What’s also interesting was the sudden release of the new Avengers Infinity War trailer showing off both The Avengers, Captain America and his renegade crew, and The Guardians of the Galaxy with Thor. It seems very suspicious that the trailer would release a few days after the sneak peek is released. I suspect and hope that the agents’ actions this year are going to have a direct impact on the movie storyline.
The clip ends with Virgil being killed by one of the roaches and the gang running away from the alien creature.
Every minute felt like something important was about to happen and if you blinked you would miss it. For a teaser, it definitely did a great job ‘teasing” and I can’t wait to see the full episode when it airs this Friday on ABC.
