A Sneak Peak into Agents of Shield Season 5

Late this past Sunday, ABC released the first 17 minutes of season 5 episode 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and it was one crazy introduction for the new season. While we aren’t introduced to any new relevant characters yet, it does leave a lot of speculation as to what the new season has in store and how it will tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (cough Infinity Wars).

Warning spoilers. If you haven’t watched the clip yet and do not want to be spoiled, I suggest you turn back now.

If you don’t remember what happened in the previous season, Agent Coulson and the gang were abducted by a man in a black suit and came to realize that they were on a space station.

This new season picks up right where we left things. The gang is abducted by a person wearing a suit who we find out is actually an alien wearing a costume to make himself look human. The gang is taken to an empty room only to find another monolith!

If you don’t remember the monolith, it was the big rock that transported Agent Simmons to another planet. In similar fashion, this new monolith liquefies and swallows the crew transporting them to what appears to be a space station.

There we see Agent Coulson meet two mystery men who are currently on the run from a loud screeching noise.  We later find out it belongs to a race of aliens that are referred to as “roaches”. One of the mysterious guys are instantly pulled out of sight and dies off-screen. The other man identifies himself as Virgil who says he was waiting for them. He continues to explain that Coulson and his crew were prophesied to save the human race. What that actually means isn’t made clear, but one can speculate a lot of things.

One thing that does come to mind, which I think is pretty abundantly clear, is that this is going to tie into the new Avengers Infinity War movie.

As Virgil is about to continue revealing more, Mack shows up and knocks Virgil out cold mistaking him as a threat. Coulson and Mack then meet up with Agents Yoyo and Simmons who were in the middle of examining a few dead bodies they found, Agent May was teleported as well but ended somewhere else impaled against a metal hose and clip before we get a chance to see her united with the rest of the gang. Coulson starts brainstorming what’s happening.

There are two things that viewers see which make us think that this season will tie into the Infinity War arc.

The first is Yoyo thinking that S.H.I.E.L.D. had a secret division called Spear hiding somewhere on the moon. This is a direct reference to the comics where a secret division did exist, called S.W.O.R.D. Their main headquarters was a space station called Peak and they once fought off the Skrull Empire from invading Earth. The second thing was on the unconscious body of Virgil. Coulson finds a postcard from Lake Ontario, Canada. This could be a reference to a superhero group called Alpha Strike based in Canada. While most of their missions revolved around defending Canada there is one arc where they do fight an alien race called the Plodex. I don’t think Marvel will introduce Alpha Flight into the mix and the reason for showing us the postcard was to further hint at S.H.I.E.L.D. becoming involved in the war of the infinity stones.

In another scene, we are also introduced to another mystery character who wears a helmet that looks similar to that of Star-Lord from the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, this character has blue lights instead of red. It is unclear of who he is and what his role is in all of this, but it does add to the theory that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will help in the upcoming war.

What’s also interesting was the sudden release of the new Avengers Infinity War trailer showing off both The Avengers, Captain America and his renegade crew, and The Guardians of the Galaxy with Thor. It seems very suspicious that the trailer would release a few days after the sneak peek is released. I suspect and hope that the agents’ actions this year are going to have a direct impact on the movie storyline.

The clip ends with Virgil being killed by one of the roaches and the gang running away from the alien creature.

Every minute felt like something important was about to happen and if you blinked you would miss it. For a teaser, it definitely did a great job ‘teasing” and I can’t wait to see the full episode when it airs this Friday on ABC.

Get up to Speed on Everything Leading up to The Punisher on Netflix!

The Hype

Chances are you have seen a trailer for Marvel’s latest TV show The Punisher. Guns, fists, and screams to the tune of Mettalica is enough to get anyone excited for this series. It didn’t start out with just this show, however. Here is a quick breakdown of Daredevil and how The Punisher came to be.

Matt Murdock went the entire first season of Daredevil without the red and black horned body suit his crime-fighting alias is known for from the beloved Daredevil comic book series by Marvel. There were a good 12 episodes of anticipation as Matt Murdock ran up walls, performed high jump kicks off of police cars, and doled out vigilante justice with nothing but a rag from his dirty laundry to hide his face. Wilson Fisk, the underground kingpin of Hell’s Kitchen wasn’t afraid to show his own face however and come out of the shadows. Bringing down a hailstorm of negative press on our protagonist who in the end had to rely on the power of the law to take down the Kingpin and all those in his pocket. By the time Daredevil put on the horns, there were only 2 episodes left of season one. Fast Forward to the beginning of season 2 and Frank Castle aka The Punisher made his debut appearance and shot Daredevil in the head, right between the horns. So if you’d like to skip ahead to the part where Frank Castle shows himself, start at Daredevil season 2.

First Appearance

Now Frank Castle was no ordinary man with a mere philosophy to operate above and outside the law. He was a former marine who had expert skill in wielding military-grade firepower. By taking out 3 different factions of gangs with enough bullets to outfit a small platoon, it was hard to believe one man could be capable of such feats. The Punisher as he was dubbed by the District Attorney herself, was on a mission to avenge the death of his family who was gunned down in Central Park while caught in the middle of a gang shootout.

Jon Bernthal

Jon Bernthal was born to play this role. You may remember him as Shane Walsh from the Walking Dead. Where he sacrificed other survivors and left them as bait for zombies so he could live to fight another day. Or you might recall his brief albeit shirtless role as Brad, the quaalude dealing money smuggling muscle in the Wolf on Wall Street. Yet none of these roles gave Jon Bernthal the spotlight he deserved. Or in this case, the gritty bruised up shadow.

Brand new Netflix series

To give you an idea of just how bad ass The Punisher really is, he chained up Daredevil on a rooftop after escaping a chase by a swat team. Making it very clear to Daredevil that if he really wanted to, he would have killed him. But even this role, lasting an entire season, reached its conclusion. The Irish mob managed to capture Frank Castle and figure the whereabouts of a van with their stolen money. This was accomplished of course by drilling a hole into Frank Castle’s left foot. This did not break him because The Punisher, can take some serious punishment. The Irish mob had to resort to holding Frank’s pet Pitbull hostage. Who knew The Punisher had a soft spot for pups.

The fans have spoken and The Punisher truly earned his own show on streaming goliath Netflix. After a bumpy series of events, Frank Castle pleads guilty to multiple homicides and get’s himself thrown in high-security prison. But his reign in the Marvel TV universe did not end there. He breaks out of prison with the help of none other than Wilson Fisk. Once on the outside, he takes up the mantle of The Punisher. Comic book fans can rest assured knowing that Frank Castle does indeed spray paint the iconic Punisher Skull on his body armor. An X-ray of his skull with a bullet wound would become the inspiration for this symbol. So if you cannot wait to dive into the dark fast paced world of Marvel’s latest vigilante TV show, you will at least be up to speed on the basics. And now my fellow metahumans, you are ready to begin enjoying The Punisher on Netflix.

Orville vs Discovery

Orville vs Star Trek Discovery

Who Did it Better?

This year two new sci-fi series came out, Star Trek Discovery and The Orville.  These two shows are both sci-fi tv series; one is an action-packed story, while the other is a comedy.  And lately, the only thing that people can talk about when it comes to these two is which one is better; a moot point. Which begs the question, what is the better argument?  Instead of comparing two separate shows to each other to see what we like better, we should instead be asking do any of these shows follow along with what Gene Roddenberry, the man who created the original Star Trek, had envisioned with his show. Roddenberry had a very particular vision in mind that many people, including myself, wish would come true.

The Vision that Started it All

First, let’s define what his vision is! Despite the constant dangers that Captain James Kirk and the Enterprise encountered, there was always a silver lining to be found. This helped to create a very positive and uplifting glimpse into the future. I think his entire point was to show an example of what humanity was capable of.  This is very evident in the Federation of Planets, a fictional United Nations alike government.  In this future, there is hardly any internal strife, hunger, hardships, and poverty.

What was also evident was that despite there being a conflict with the other races like the Klingons, they would always try to resolve their differences peacefully. The Federation’s dream is and always will be to unite the galaxy together or at the very least to make friends and be of equal standing with each other.  It’s a beautiful notion is it not? A reality where the one continuous mission is “to seek out new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

Now that we have described what Roddenberry had envisioned for his show, let’s now see how these two new shows, Discovery and Orville, follow or stray away from this vision.

Star Trek Discovery

First up we have Star Trek Discovery. The series starts off with the main protagonist Michael Burnham aboard the USS Shenzhou and serves as its First Officer to Captain Phillippa Geogiou. The series eventually makes its way to the USS Discovery where we meet her crew and its captain Gabriel Lorca.

Star Trek Discovery
Sonequa Martin-Green as Michale Burnham

One of the things I think it does very well visually shows us what a clean and efficient future looks like. New Star Trek series have always made this universe feel like we’re watching the future, and while for some the new uniforms and the upgraded technology may trouble some, I enjoy it. However, there are quite a few key differences between this Star Trek and the original series. It feels like it separates itself is that the show is too dark and grim, which is very different from any of the other Star Trek series.

The Reason

As an example following the protagonist Michael Burnham during her actions at the Battle of the Binary Stars with the Klingon Empire, which is the start of an all-out war with the Klingons. She commits mutiny in order to take command of the ship so that she can attack the Klingon vessel first before they could be fired upon. This act of treason was borne out of her Vulcan training of pure logic and her human emotions. Starfleet also has strict directives to not engage first. This put her entire crew and ship in danger.  She and the rest of the crew end up losing both their captain and ship. This was all presented in episode 1 and the situation is already dark and gruesome. The reason I don’t like it is that for me Star Trek was always about exploring humanity at its peak.

The Orville

The Orville a comical parody of the Star Trek franchise makes an attempt to bring up many sensitive issues such as gender equality, animal cruelty, etc. from a funny and comedic point of view. It goes boldly goes where no man has gone before technologically. Though what I find it does well, other than giving it puns and cheesy one-liners, is show a very wide range of cooperation and tries settling differences through discussion.

The Orville crew
The Orville crew

People may cry Social Justice Warrior with the show, but it very closely follows the Star Trek formalities of trying to find a third option to deal with a problem; always keeping in mind that the future will not always be this bleak. In my mind, it does a great job in making sure that anyone can enjoy the show, not just the sci-fi fans or the traditional Trekie.  Another important factor is that I don’t feel despair, or at least the characters don’t, helping to keep the mood light. This, however, is the biggest gripe I have about the show, at times it feels it doesn’t address things deep enough, like the creator of the show, Seth Macfarlane, only wants to touch on sensitive topics, but not give a definitive answer to questions.

For Example

In one episode the show delves into gender equality issues. One of the officers Lt. Commander Bortus comes from a race of all males. They have no females in their world and the reason is that whenever a female baby is born, they perform a sex change surgery. Naturally, the commander and his mate gives birth to a female and instantly requests to do the sex change.

Naturally, the crew of the Orville take offense to this and says that it’s wrong to force someone, who can’t make their own decisions, to change their sex. While the other side argues that they do it because society is all male and that life as a female would be extremely difficult, that and they think women are inferior beings. They also argue that it’s a part of their custom and ways to do the sex change and outsiders don’t have a right to say their culture is wrong. A lot of arguments are drawn out on both sides but in the end, it is decided that the sex change will happen and the commander ends the show by saying no matter if it is a he or a she, the child will still be loved.

This episode touches on a lot of sensitive topics and brings a lot of arguments that are used today, however at the end of it all, no answer was given as to who was right and who was wrong.

Two Sides of the Same Coin

Currently, I think The Orville is more similar to the original Star Trek than Discovery. I’d like to think of watching Orville as sitting at home comfortably on the couch feeling content inside. However, watching Discovery feels like a roller coaster where there are draw-dropping action and plot twists; it’s new and exciting and you don’t know what to expect. Each show has their own plot devices and tackle situations differently and honor the memory of Gene Roddenberry differently, like two sides of the same coin.

Rick and Morty – A LOT to be Thankful for

Happy Thanksgiving Meta-Humans!  Mr. Poopybutthole has a surprise for you and so does Adult Swim!

Adult Swim released a short video Thanksgiving showcasing Mr.Poopybutthole’s life with (what seems to be) his wife. They show this in a series of photos in an album called “Poop in my Pants.”

The album recants memories that actually happened in Rick and Morty with a lot of the photos swapped out with Mr.Poopybutthole and his wife.  The neat part is, is that it looks like Mr.Poopybutthole is actually continuing from where we left him in Season 2.

There are a ton of Easter Eggs in the video and the video itself is extremely heartfelt.  Truly a treat for Rick and Morty fans.  However, we’ll leave it to you to find them and see if our lists match up.

A favorite reference in the photo album is the Mrs.Poopybutthole’s photo mimicking Beyonce’s first pregnancy pose.  Below is a side-by-side comparison.

Upon this trailer’s release, fans on Reddit eluded to the fact that a potential Christmas Special may air.  That we cannot confirm or deny, but we’d be happy if there was one!

Watch the trailer and relive the moments of the show (and a little extra) through Mr. Poopybutthole eyes.

FIRST LOOK | Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Crystal Fox

As we countdown to the launch of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15th, we see the release of more videos of what’s to come for the movie.  If you’ve seen the trailers, you more than likely have seen the appearance of the Crystal Fox.

Just yesterday, Star Wars released a video of the painstaking work and intricate details that it takes to create one of these Crystal Foxes (wouldn’t CGI just be easier – Oh wait, they digitally scan the fox? Okay then LOL).

The video talks about “Animatronics” as John Boyega who plays Finn explains and then the Crystal Fox feature continues on stating that to create one of these fancy foxes requires 25,000 CRYSTALS!

Check out the video below and don’t forget to catch Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters December 15th.

You know we’ll be there!

‘Touch By an Angel’, Della Reese dies at 86

The world of television lost a beautiful soul today, Della Reese, who was popular for her role as Tess in the TV series Touch By an Angel.  Surrounded by family and friends she was 86 upon her passing in her California home.

People was first to report the tragic news.

Her co-star Roma Downey, who played by Monica in the show confirmed the news with a statement,

“On behalf of her husband, Franklin Lett, and all her friends and family, I share with you the news that our beloved Della Reese has passed away peacefully at her California home last evening surrounded by love,” the statement reads. “She was an incredible Wife, Mother, Grandmother, friend and Pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer. Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people. She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years on Touched By An Angel. I know heaven has a brand new angel this day. Della Reese will be forever in our hearts. Rest In Peace, sweet angel. We love you.”

Executive Producer of the hit show took to Twitter and tweeted

As a fan of the show, I used to watch it every Sunday with my family. I even recorded the show on VHS, so I may dig them up again to reminisce. They’re probably in my garage somewhere.

It is so sad and tragic to see such a talent leave the world.   May you rest in peace “Tess”.

Recapping the American Music Awards 2017

If you’re looking to get straight to the drama without the extra fluff, we talk about the 2017 American Music Awards here on your Instant Noodle update.

Be warned spoiler alerts are in effect as we talk about the best performances and the winners of the night.

A few highlights from the show include Selena Gomez allegedly lip-syncing her performance of “Wolves.”  This comes from months of being out of commission since her kidney transplant which from our perspective, WHO CARES!?  It’s Selena Gomez.

Amazed that they had a K-POP boy band perform at the American Music Awards.  I saw a few fans get pretty excited by this. Like this dude!

Access Hollywood even had Shawn Mendes talk about Taylor Swift’s reputation album which I thought was pretty slick.  That would be a personal preference if I were to interview Shawn Mendes.

Performances for the American Music Awards 2017 included Christina Aguilera, Alessia Cara, Alesso, BTS, Kelly Clarkson, Florida Georgia Line, Selena Gomez, Niall Horan, Imagine Dragons, Nick Jonas, Khalid, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, P!nk, Portugal. The Man, Diana Ross, Hailee Steinfeld, watt and Zedd.
